SUKKUR: An awareness session on the law protecting women from harassment at the workplace was held at a government girls’ high school in Sukkur by the regional office of the Sindh provincial ombudsman.
The sixth such session was organised at the Government Girls High School on Minara Road with the aim of informing women teachers and educational staff about their legal rights, available protections and the complaint mechanisms in place to promote a safe and dignified working environment.
Consultant to the provincial ombudsman in Sukkur, Muhammad Iqbal Arain, gave a detailed briefing on both visible and hidden forms of workplace harassment and explained the legal safeguards provided under the 2010 law. He said harassment was not merely an individual issue but one that affected the credibility and performance of institutions, and stressed that a zero-tolerance policy was essential to address it.
He urged affected women to report incidents without fear, saying silence only empowered perpetrators. He also emphasised that institutional managements had a legal and moral responsibility to activate complaint committees and ensure a safe environment. Timely awareness, he said, was an effective tool in preventing harassment and such sessions helped promote accountability and transparency.
Arain said informing women about their rights was the foundation of a strong, just and progressive society, and reaffirmed that the ombudsman’s office remained fully available to provide prompt, transparent and free justice to women.
The session was attended by TEO Rukhsana Lashari, school principal Sajida Farooqi, officials from the regional office including Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah, along with a large number of teachers and students. Participants appreciated the efforts of the provincial ombudsman’s office and described them as the need of the hour, assuring full cooperation in creating harassment-free environments in educational institutions.
