BERLIN: Germany is set to strengthen its air force with plans to acquire 15 additional US-made F-35 fighter jets, a move that would expand its fleet to 50 and further integrate its capabilities within Nato’s European defence framework, according to a report by Der Spiegel.
The German news magazine, citing classified documents prepared for the Bundestag’s budget committee, said the government had earmarked approximately $2.92 billion for the new aircraft. The funding proposal is expected to be presented for formal parliamentary approval in the coming weeks, marking another step in Berlin’s accelerated military modernization drive.
The decision to procure more of the stealth aircraft reflects Germany’s determination to strengthen its deterrence posture amid growing security challenges in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Defence officials have described the F-35 as central to the Bundeswehr’s long-term strategy to rebuild and modernize its air power after decades of underinvestment.
Produced by US defence contractor Lockheed Martin, the F-35 is regarded as one of the most technologically advanced combat aircraft in the world, featuring stealth capabilities, advanced sensors, and integrated data systems that allow for coordination with allied forces. Germany’s initial purchase of the fighter jets in 2022 represented a major policy shift, signaling a move away from its traditionally cautious defence stance toward deeper military cooperation with the United States and Nato partners.
