ISLAMABAD: The Director General Political at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ed Llewellyn CVO OBE, visited Islamabad this week for a series of high-level engagements aimed at reinforcing the relationship between the United Kingdom and Pakistan.
During his visit, Llewellyn engaged with senior Pakistani officials to discuss a wide range of issues, encompassing security, regional stability, and long-term economic cooperation. Speaking publicly, Llewellyn reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to promoting peace in South Asia and praised Pakistan’s efforts to de-escalate rising tensions in the Middle East.
DG Political UK emphasized the urgent need for a cessation of attacks on civilian infrastructure, noting that such measures were essential to protecting communities and maintaining stability. The diplomat also highlighted the ongoing threat posed by terrorism, acknowledging the sacrifices of Pakistan’s law enforcement and security personnel.
Llewellyn underscored that the United Kingdom remained “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Pakistan in combating extremism and that both nations would continue to deepen cooperation to tackle shared security challenges. Beyond security matters, Llewellyn underlined the UK’s support for Pakistan’s economic development.
He spoke of continued collaboration on initiatives designed to strengthen climate resilience, foster sustainable development, and encourage people-to-people connections. Analysts noted that this dual emphasis on security and economic growth reflected a broader strategy by London to maintain robust diplomatic ties with Islamabad, particularly amid a period of global uncertainty.
Commenting on his visit, Llewellyn described it as “a demonstration of the strength and depth of the UK–Pakistan relationship at a time of global instability,” stressing that sustained dialogue was critical to supporting regional stability and addressing mutual challenges.
