ISLAMABAD: The Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, underscored the vital importance of reforms and growth within Pakistan’s gems and jewellery sector during a virtual meeting held on Tuesday. This meeting, which brought together senior officials from both the public and private sectors, was a significant step in addressing the sector’s challenges and aligning with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ambitious vision for transforming this billion-dollar industry into a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy.
Khan highlighted the strategic role that the gems and jewellery sector could play in bolstering the nation’s economic growth. He noted that Prime Minister Sharif has actively engaged in discussions over the past few months, holding multiple meetings to explore solutions for the sector’s issues and to create new growth opportunities. This proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing the industry.
During the meeting, Council Chairman Salman Hanif raised concerns about regulatory barriers that are currently impeding the sector’s development. Specifically, Hanif pointed to the need for amendments to SRO 760, which he identified as a significant obstacle to the industry’s progress. He argued that these regulatory issues must be addressed to fully unlock the sector’s potential.
Hanif emphasized that regularizing the gems and jewellery sector is essential for achieving its full economic potential. He warned that without tackling these regulatory challenges, the industry may struggle to meet its export targets and contribute effectively to Pakistan’s economic advancement. The call for reform highlights the sector’s need for a supportive regulatory environment to foster growth and sustainability.
