Israeli kills 40 more in Khan Yunis, targeting civilians

The harrowing scene left behind by Israel’s offensive is a stark reminder of the ongoing indiscriminate violence faced by the Palestinian people

GAZA STRIP: In yet another heinous act of aggression, Israeli forces carried out a deadly airstrike on a humanitarian zone in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis on Tuesday, killing at least 40 innocent civilians. The strike, which targeted an area known as Al-Mawasi, resulted in large-scale destruction, burying entire families under the rubble of what were once shelters for displaced people.

Gaza’s Civil Defence official, Mohammed al-Mughair, confirmed the death toll and stated that 60 others were seriously injured. The devastation left deep craters in the ground, wiping out multiple families. “Our crews are still working to recover 15 missing people as a result of targeting the tents of the displaced in Mawasi, Khan Yunis,” Mughair revealed, underscoring the catastrophic human toll of the attack.

Mahmud Bassal, a civil defence spokesman, condemned the attack as a massacre, declaring, “Entire families disappeared in the Mawasi Khan Yunis massacre, buried alive in deep holes created by the airstrikes.” The harrowing scene left behind by Israel’s offensive is a stark reminder of the ongoing indiscriminate violence faced by the Palestinian people. Despite international outrage, the Israeli military attempted to justify this latest slaughter by claiming the strike targeted a Hamas command-and-control center.

However, Hamas swiftly denied these claims, branding them “a blatant lie” aimed at justifying the murder of innocent civilians. Local Palestinian authorities have repeatedly highlighted that such strikes overwhelmingly target civilian infrastructure, displacing and killing thousands. This latest atrocity adds to the horrifying toll inflicted by Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza. The Gaza health ministry reported that over 40,988 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians, have been killed since Israel launched its so-called retaliatory strikes.

Yet, Israeli officials continue to deny responsibility for the mass casualties, dismissing the verified numbers reported from Gaza. Humanitarian organisations have called for an immediate ceasefire, decrying Israel’s use of disproportionate force and its blatant violation of international law. The ongoing massacre in Gaza is not only a humanitarian disaster but also a grave violation of human rights. The global community must step in to hold Israel accountable for these war crimes and to prevent further bloodshed in the besieged enclave.
