SUKKUR: A breach in the Gujra Wah canal caused widespread flooding in parts of Nawabshah, affecting urban settlements including Allah Bakhsh Town and Major Khalid City. Water from the breach spread to Chaudhry Barkat Goth, the Gatha Factory area, and surrounding neighborhoods, prompting severe panic among residents and emergency evacuations.
District administration, Rescue 1122, and officers from the Irrigation Department rushed to the scene immediately after the breach was reported. Deputy Commissioner Shaheed Benazirabad Abdul Samad Nizamani said that affected residents have been moved to safe locations, with priority given to protecting life and property.
More than 51 men, women, and children were rescued by the teams during the operations. Following six hours of intensive work, authorities from the Irrigation Department and district administration managed to plug the breach. Temporary shelters, including tents and other essential materials, have been provided to those displaced by the flooding.
The Deputy Commissioner confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the canal breach, as officials continue to monitor and mitigate potential risks in the affected areas.
