ISLAMABAD: Chaudhry Salik Hussain, the Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, has categorically refuted recent media reports alleging the disappearance of 50,000 Pakistani pilgrims in Iraq. Addressing the controversy, Minister Hussain stated that such claims are “entirely false and misleading,” and clarified that he did not make any such statements during a recent Senate committee meeting.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Minister Hussain underscored the importance of accurate and responsible reporting. He urged media outlets to verify information thoroughly before dissemination, highlighting the potential for misinformation to cause unnecessary panic and concern.
The Minister explained that Pakistani pilgrims, who travel to Iraq primarily for religious pilgrimages known as Ziarat, usually do so through private operators. He assured that the Ministry is actively working to enhance the facilitation process for these pilgrims, with a strong focus on their safety and well-being during their spiritual journeys.
Minister Hussain reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Pakistani pilgrims abroad. He emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in preventing the spread of false information, which can undermine public trust and create undue anxiety among families and the wider community.
