DHAKA: The envoys of China, India and Pakistan called on Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday, signaling an early consolidation of ties following recent general election.

The diplomats congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for steering the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to what they described as a decisive mandate, characterizing the polls as among the freest and fairest in the country’s history. They also conveyed formal felicitations to Dr Rahman on his assumption of office, in meetings that blended ceremony with strategic calculation.

China’s ambassador, Yao Wen, reiterated Beijing’s firm backing for the prime minister’s “Bangladesh First” policy, framing it as compatible with China’s long-term regional engagement. He said the Chinese premier intended to work closely with Dhaka to deepen bilateral cooperation, an emphasis that underscored the weight Beijing attaches to its ties with Bangladesh.

In response, the foreign minister stressed the importance of advancing the Bangladesh–China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, while pressing for greater Chinese engagement with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the early repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Dhaka Imran Haider expressed Islamabad’s interest in expanding cooperation with the new administration. Dr Rahman, for his part, signaled Dhaka’s intention to explore fresh avenues of collaboration, while emphasizing Bangladesh’s commitment to stronger regional cooperation across South Asia.

India’s High Commissioner Pranay Verma similarly conveyed New Delhi’s readiness to work closely with the new government. Both sides spoke of building a forward-looking and balanced partnership grounded in mutual interest. Courtesy to The Muslim Times (Dhaka)
