KARACH: A new citizen-led initiative, Hamaara Karachi, was formally announced on Wednesday, signaling a fresh effort to address the city’s persistent civic challenges in the aftermath of the Gul Plaza tragedy.
Described as a not-for-profit, non-political, and zero-funding movement, Hamaara Karachi seeks to improve the daily lives of residents by fostering collaboration, offering assistance in kind, providing expert guidance, and mobilizing volunteers across the city. In a press statement, a representative of the movement said the initiative was grounded in the principles of community spirit, civic responsibility, and collective problem-solving.
“We are harnessing the strength of collaboration to create sustainable solutions for the everyday challenges Karachi faces,” the spokesperson said. The representative highlighted that the movement’s mission was to bring together diverse groups — including residents, professionals, institutions, and local authorities — in pursuit of a safer, cleaner, and more vibrant city for all.
The announcement emphasized that Hamaara Karachi was not reliant on external funding or political affiliations, instead drawing its strength from the participation and ownership of the city’s residents. By promoting volunteerism and community engagement, the movement aims to complement existing public services and respond to gaps in infrastructure, safety, and civic management.
The organizers urged all Karachiites to join the initiative, stressing that meaningful change would require active participation from those who live and work in the city. Observers noted that while Karachi has seen numerous civic campaigns over the years, the emphasis on a zero-funding, citizen-driven model represented a new approach to addressing entrenched urban problems.
As Hamaara Karachi begins its work, the movement hopes to inspire a sense of collective responsibility and shared accountability, encouraging residents to play a direct role in shaping the city’s future while fostering stronger ties between communities and local authorities.
