ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has firmly rejected any prospect of extending his tenure as the head of the judiciary, clarifying that even if an extension were offered to all judges, he would not accept it for himself. His categorical stance came during an informal discussion with journalists, where he addressed speculations regarding possible tenure extensions and responded to various queries related to judicial affairs.
The conversation took a notable turn when a journalist asked CJP Isa to comment on remarks made by Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, who had reportedly inquired if the Chief Justice would consider an extension if the retirement age of all judges was extended. Justice Isa responded with a direct and bold statement: “Bring Rana Sanaullah before me.”
CJP Isa then clarified that there had been a meeting involving key legal figures such as Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, and the Attorney General of Pakistan. However, he made it clear that Rana Sanaullah was not present at that meeting. His remarks sought to dispel any confusion surrounding the involvement of the prime minister’s adviser in these discussions.
The chief justice further revealed that during these talks, there were considerations regarding the extension of tenure for all chief justices, but he immediately expressed his refusal to accept such an offer. “I said, do it for others; I will not accept it only for myself,” the CJP asserted. This firm position reflects his dedication to adhering to judicial norms and ensuring that no personal interest clouds the integrity of the judiciary. Justice Isa also humbly added that he did not know what the future held, noting, “I don’t know whether I will be alive tomorrow or not.”
