KARACHI: The Climate Action Committee has organized a “Life” march scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 3 PM, aimed at raising awareness about the pressing environmental issues facing Karachi and the broader Sindh region. The march will commence at an unspecified location and culminate at the Karachi Press Club, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds, including environmentally conscious individuals, students, workers, and advocates from various sectors.
During a recent press conference held at the Karachi Press Club, prominent figures from the committee, including Advocate Abdul Khaliq Junejo, Yasir Darya, Abdul Majeed Motani, Ahmed Shabbir, Noreen, and Ali Ghulam Ali, articulated their concerns regarding Karachi’s environmental crises. They emphasized that the city’s ecological challenges are not isolated but are deeply intertwined with the environmental health of the entire Sindh region. The committee leaders issued stark warnings about the potential consequences of diverting water from the Indus River, which they claim could lead to the destruction of the delta, depletion of mangrove forests, and increased vulnerability to sea-level rise and storms.
The leaders criticized various Sindh government initiatives, asserting that many projects have resulted in the displacement of longstanding Sindhi villages and the disruption of natural waterways in Karachi. They argue that such actions are in direct violation of both national and international environmental regulations. Highlighting the adverse effects of pollution from industrialized nations, they pointed out that local rivers like Hub, Lyari, and Malir have effectively transformed into sewage channels.
