KARACHI:: Indonesia’s Consul General in Karachi, Mdzakir, said climate change was not merely an environmental issue but a shared global challenge closely linked to development, the economy and social stability.
He was speaking as chief guest at the second International Symposium on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability held at Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), Nawabshah.
The consul general said Pakistan was facing serious challenges including floods, extreme heat, water scarcity and agricultural losses, while Indonesia was also being affected by rising sea levels and unusual weather patterns, making joint and urgent action unavoidable.
Highlighting Indonesia’s environmental goals, he said the country was committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier, and to significantly reducing carbon emissions by 2030. He described renewable energy, a just energy transition, mangrove restoration and forest conservation as Indonesia’s key priorities.
Mdzakir stressed the need to enhance cooperation between Pakistan and Indonesia in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable infrastructure, and the education and research sectors. He said stronger collaboration among countries of the Global South had become an urgent necessity.
In conclusion, the consul general thanked QUEST Nawabshah and the symposium organisers, saying such academic and research forums played an important role in linking environmental challenges with practical development strategies.
