KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has launched a province-wide anti-polio campaign by administering polio drops to children under the age of five at a government school in Chanesar Goth, Karachi. Speaking on the occasion, Murad Ali Shah acknowledged instances of negligence and improper execution of standard operating procedures during previous anti-polio drives.
After inaugurating the campaign, the chief minister signed a formal commitment reaffirming his resolve to make Sindh polio-free and to contribute to a polio-free Pakistan. The pledge underscored the provincial government’s continued focus on eradicating the virus. The campaign will continue until 8 February and aims to vaccinate 10.5 million children across 30 districts of Sindh. More than 80,000 polio workers have been deployed, supported by strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure coverage and accountability.
Responding to a question, the Sindh chief minister admitted past failures, pointing to serious negligence during the interim government, particularly in 2018 and subsequent years. He was replying to a query on why polio continues to exist despite sustained efforts to eradicate the virus and what factors have contributed to its recurrence.
Murad Ali Shah also urged media representatives to support the polio program and encouraged media campaigns in favor of the ongoing drive. He acknowledged that there remain issues in the program’s execution and said the polio teams were continuously working to address them. He further invited the media to help identify gaps and instances of negligence.
