LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed officials to implement top-tier security arrangements for the upcoming Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations. This initiative comes in response to the need for heightened security amid ongoing concerns over public safety. During a recent law and order session, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of robust security measures. She instructed the deployment of bullet-proof vehicles, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), and bullet-proof vests for police officers to ensure their safety.
Additionally, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the expansion of provincial check posts and allocated Rs1 billion for enhancing the police force’s operational capabilities. She also stressed the necessity of specialized training for officers stationed at these check posts and underscored the need for improved border security. The session included the approval of restructuring and advanced training for the Border Military Police, alongside the introduction of body cameras for officers on duty to enhance accountability. Maryam Nawaz initiated a campaign to eradicate illegal weapons and reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout Punjab.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of a non-discriminatory approach in cracking down on criminal elements and called for a decisive response to any attacks on police check posts to deter future incidents. In a move to uphold discipline within the police force, a ban was imposed on the use of cameras and social media by on-duty officers. This policy follows the suspension of a police constable, Bahawal Sher, for violating departmental regulations by sharing a video on social media. The video, which showed Sher smoking a cigarette while in uniform and displaying two pistols, led to his suspension and a directive from City Police Officer (CPO) Captain (retired) Muhammad Ali Zia for an investigation.
This incident mirrors recent actions taken by the Sindh Police, which suspended 12 officers last month after videos of them engaging in inappropriate behavior on social media went viral. Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon had ordered the suspensions following official complaints and departmental reviews. The measures reflect an ongoing effort by provincial authorities to maintain order and discipline within the police force while ensuring a secure environment for public celebrations.
