KARACHI: The deputy commissioner of Karachi’s West district, Ali Zulfiqar Memon, has announced strict measures to remove encroachments from footpaths, main roads and public spaces, warning that no leniency will be shown to those who defy the law.
Speaking in Karachi, Memon said encroachment groups should not misuse what he described as his earlier soft and conciliatory approach. He directed all three assistant commissioners to work in coordination with relevant civic agencies to eliminate illegal structures and obstructions from roads, pavements and other public areas.
He urged those involved in encroachments to remove them voluntarily, warning that failure to do so would result in strict legal action. Footpaths and walkways, he said, were meant for pedestrians and their right to free movement could not be compromised. Any form of encroachment on pavements or main thoroughfares would not be tolerated.
Memon also ordered action against illegal petrol pumps, including checks on fuel measurement standards. He said prices of essential commodities must strictly follow the official price list issued by the Karachi commissioner’s office, adding that displaying the price list at shops was mandatory.
Providing basic facilities to citizens at the grassroots level, he said, remained the administration’s foremost responsibility.
