DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A thought-provoking debate on countering violent extremism was recently held at Government Girls Degree College No. 1 in Dera Ismail Khan. The session, titled “Countering Violent Extremism through Multiple Strategies,” brought students together to discuss one of the most pressing challenges facing Pakistan and the wider region.
The event was organized under the guidance of Principal Afia Saadat Qaisrani, whose leadership ensured the smooth conduct of the debate. It followed the Asian Parliamentary style, with participants assigned roles as Speaker, Ruling Party, and Opposition, allowing for structured discussion and dynamic engagement.
Students demonstrated confidence and intellectual maturity as they explored the roots of extremism, its social, moral, and educational consequences, and ways to counter its spread. They highlighted the dangers of hatred, intolerance, and societal unrest, emphasizing that violent extremism posed a serious threat to national progress and stability. Education, dialogue, tolerance, patience, and fostering positive thinking were presented as the most effective tools to combat these challenges.
In her concluding address, Principal Afia Saadat Qaisrani stressed that peace formed the foundation of both individual growth and collective development. She said such intellectual exercises encouraged critical thinking and nurtured positive attitudes among students, skills she described as essential for navigating today’s complex social environment.
The Principal also praised the efforts of the CCA Team In-charge, Ms Shagufta Kanwal, along with faculty members of the Pakistan Studies Department—Ms Kulsoom Bibi, Ms Elizabeth, and Asia Khalil—for organizing the event efficiently under time constraints and bringing honor to the college.
Students’ performances drew widespread appreciation, and organizers reaffirmed their commitment to holding similar events in the future. Observers said debates of this nature not only enrich academic life but also play a vital role in shaping socially aware and responsible citizens. By providing a platform to discuss extremism openly, educational institutions in Dera Ismail Khan are helping to equip young people with the knowledge and values needed to build a more tolerant and peaceful society.
