Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry criticizes efforts to politicize the operation and clarifies its objective, including severing links between terrorism and criminal activities such as smuggling and illegal property transactions

RAWALPINDI: Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), is scheduled to hold a press conference today (Monday) at 3 PM at the General Headquarters. The briefing is expected to focus on current security challenges facing Pakistan, including recent increases in terrorism and the army’s strategic role in addressing these issues.
The press conference follows a series of significant developments related to terrorism and security in the country. On July 22, the ISPR’s previous briefing covered a broad spectrum of topics, including Operation Azm-e-Istakham, digital terrorism, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) sit-in, and the ongoing conflict in Palestine. During earlier statements, Lt Gen Chaudhry emphasized that Operation Azm-e-Istakham is a counter-terrorism initiative rather than a traditional military operation. He stressed that this campaign should not be confused with past operations like Zarb-e-Azb, which were aimed at larger scale military engagements.
Lt Gen Chaudhry criticized efforts to politicize the operation and clarified its objective: severing links between terrorism and criminal activities such as smuggling and illegal property transactions. In addition to discussing Operation Azm-e-Istakham, Lt Gen Chaudhry condemned digital terrorism, describing misinformation campaigns targeting the military and its leadership as a serious national threat. He drew parallels between digital and physical terrorists, highlighting how false information is used to destabilize the country.
The press conference will also address recent rumors regarding military involvement in civil protests, including the TLP sit-in at Faizabad. Lt Gen Chaudhry is expected to reaffirm the military’s and government’s commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful and diplomatic means. Additionally, he will cover the resolution of the Chaman border sit-in, which was settled by establishing documentation requirements for cross-border movement and will criticize the promotion of illegal trade at the Afghan border. This briefing is anticipated to provide crucial insights into Pakistan’s current security landscape and the measures being implemented to counteract terrorism and ensure national stability.
