Digital crisis

In an era where the digital world is the backbone of global economies, the recent global disruption caused by the cutting of an undersea cable serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our interconnected world. While experts have since restored global internet services, the lingering effects in Pakistan have sparked widespread criticism and concern. With internet speeds reduced by 30 percent to 40 percent in the last two weeks, the country has already suffered an estimated loss of $300 million. This situation has raised alarms about the critical role of uninterrupted internet service in sustaining economic growth and stability. Pakistan’s economy, already on shaky ground, has been particularly vulnerable to such disruptions. The impact of these internet outages goes far beyond inconvenience; they have significant economic repercussions. In 2023 alone, Pakistan endured a staggering PKR 65 billion loss due to internet shutdowns, according to a research report. The total duration of these shutdowns was recorded at 259 hours, affecting approximately 83 million users.

These figures are not just statistics; they represent the lost opportunities, diminished productivity, and stifled economic growth that are the inevitable results of a digital blackout. The global data compiled by a German research institute paints a grim picture of the economic consequences of prolonged internet outages. Countries like India, Russia, and Iran have suffered billions of dollars in losses due to such disruptions. While Pakistan’s losses may not be on the same scale, the impact is nonetheless severe, especially given the country’s already precarious economic situation. The speculation surrounding the implementation of a firewall in Pakistan has only added to the controversy, with many questioning the government’s role in these disruptions. Although the government has denied such claims, the persistent slow internet speeds and the significant economic losses have left users skeptical.

The uncertainty and lack of transparency only exacerbate the problem, leading to a growing distrust in the government’s ability to manage and protect the nation’s digital infrastructure. The situation is particularly alarming when considering the importance of internet connectivity in modern society. With approximately 120 million people regularly using the internet in Pakistan—constituting 45 percent of the total population—any hindrance in accessing modern technology could further exacerbate the country’s economic woes. The internet is not just a tool for communication; it is a critical component of commerce, education, healthcare, and governance. In a country already grappling with multiple crises, the last thing Pakistan can afford is a digital setback. The government must urgently address these obstacles to prevent further economic decline. This involves not only restoring internet speeds but also ensuring the resilience of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure against future disruptions.

It is crucial for the government to be transparent with the public about the causes of these disruptions and the steps being taken to resolve them. In addition, the government should explore partnerships with international technology firms to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure and safeguard against future outages. In conclusion, the ongoing internet disruptions in Pakistan are more than just a technical issue; they are a critical economic concern that demands immediate attention. The government must take decisive action to restore confidence in the nation’s digital infrastructure and prevent further losses. In a world where the digital economy is increasingly central to national prosperity, Pakistan cannot afford to be left behind. The time for action is now, before the country’s economic stability is further compromised by its digital vulnerabilities.
