KARACHI: Sindh’s provincial government has announced plans to introduce a digital e-challan system within the Sindh Food Authority, following the successful adoption of similar technology in the traffic sector, officials said on Thursday.
The initiative was outlined by Makhdoom Mehboob-uz-Zaman, the province’s Minister for Food, during a meeting with Faryal Talpur, central president of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Women’s Wing. According to Mehboob-uz-Zaman, the meeting provided a detailed briefing on the Authority’s broader digitalization strategy, which will include online registration, a complaint-management system, and the new digital challan mechanism.
The minister said these reforms are aimed at improving transparency and service delivery, ensuring that the public has access to efficient and accountable food safety and regulatory processes. Officials noted that the Sindh Food Authority has recently stepped up actions against substandard food products, and the digital systems are expected to streamline enforcement and monitoring, allowing authorities to respond more quickly to complaints and irregularities.
Mehboob-uz-Zaman also briefed Ms Talpur on the department’s livestock policy, detailing measures intended to improve regulation, animal health standards, and oversight of the province’s livestock sector. Observers said the introduction of an e-challan system represents a significant move towards modernizing Sindh’s regulatory framework, reflecting a wider push across provincial departments to leverage technology for governance and public service delivery.
By digitizing processes that were previously paper-based, the government aims to enhance accountability, reduce delays, and make regulatory enforcement more accessible to citizens, while simultaneously strengthening food safety standards across the province.
