DISTRICT KHYBER: In an unprecedented move, female Additional Station House Officers (SHOs) have been appointed in all four police stations of District Khyber for the first time. According to an order issued by the office of District Police Officer Saleem Abbas Kalachi, Lady Constable Mehak Pervez has been transferred from Ali Masjid General to Police Station Landi Kotal as Additional SHO.
Lady Constable Naila Jabbar, previously on general duty in Bara, has been appointed as Additional SHO at Ali Masjid. Lady Constable Fatima Samin Jan, who was serving at the Women’s Desk, has been made Additional SHO Bara, while Constable Nusrat, previously stationed at the Police Line, has been appointed Additional SHO Jamrud. The public has expressed mixed reactions to these exceptional appointments in the tribal districts.
While young people on social media have welcomed the female SHOs, serious circles have criticized this step as unwise given the current circumstances. Common citizens have questioned the rationale behind appointing constables as Additional SHOs, citing concerns rooted in tribal traditions. There are also reservations regarding the recent militant attacks on the police, suggesting that bringing in female officers could further complicate matters for the police force.
Proponents of the merger have deemed the appointment of female police officers as Additional SHOs a timely necessity, arguing that it will help address women’s issues more effectively and allow women to voice their grievances more comfortably in front of a female officer.
