ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level inter-ministerial meeting in Islamabad today focused on strengthening Pakistan’s economic and trade ties with the European Union.
The meeting brought together senior officials from key ministries and agencies to review strategies for expanding bilateral commerce and enhancing engagement with Europe’s largest economic bloc. During the discussions, Dar highlighted the importance of fostering closer trade cooperation and identifying new avenues for economic partnership, underscoring that a proactive approach was essential to fully leverage opportunities offered by the EU market.
Deputy prime minister noted that sustained engagement, policy coordination, and targeted reforms would be critical to increasing Pakistan’s exports and attracting investment from European partners. A key focus of the meeting was the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus) framework, which Dar described as a “crucial instrument” for promoting mutually beneficial trade.
Dar urged officials to develop strategies to maximize the scheme’s potential, emphasizing that its effective utilization could significantly contribute to Pakistan’s economic growth and enhance the country’s competitiveness in international markets. Officials said the meeting also reviewed ongoing trade initiatives and explored mechanisms to address barriers, streamline procedures, and strengthen institutional capacity to support exporters.
Deputy prime minister encouraged a forward-looking approach that would not only safeguard Pakistan’s current trade interests but also identify innovative opportunities for diversification and expansion within the EU.
