KURRAM: Eight Afghan soldiers, including two key commanders, were killed in a border clash between Pakistani security forces and Afghan Taliban troops near the Kurram district, sources reported on Monday.
The conflict erupted when Afghan Taliban forces attempted to construct a security outpost along the disputed and porous border. Pakistani forces responded to alleged shelling and firing by Afghan border guards, resulting in multiple casualties, including the deaths of eight Afghan soldiers and injuries to at least 16 others.
The Pakistani forces reportedly responded “befittingly” to the aggression, with sources confirming the deaths of two Afghan commanders during the clashes.
A spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Information Ministry, when contacted by Anadolu, stated, “I have no information about the clashes yet,” adding that more details would be shared after gathering accurate reports.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Pakistan Army’s media wing regarding the incident.
The border area between Pakistan’s Kurram district and Afghanistan’s southeastern province of Khost has witnessed a series of clashes in recent days, leading to casualties on both sides. The two neighboring nations share 18 crossing points along their 2,640-kilometer (1,640-mile) long frontier, with Torkham and Chaman being the most commonly used. These crossings frequently face closures due to border tensions.
Afghanistan does not officially recognize the Durand Line, the border established in 1893 under an agreement between British India and the Afghan ruler Abdur Rahman Khan. This unresolved border issue has long been a source of friction between the two countries.
In recent months, the region has seen periods of tense calm following Pakistani “intelligence-based anti-terrorist operations” across the border, which had led to a significant military build-up on several points of the volatile frontier. The latest clashes have reignited concerns over the stability of the border regions.
