Energy dependency on Iran?

The energy crisis in Pakistan is worsening with each passing day. Sui Northern Gas has demanded a third increase in gas prices within a single year, with prices set to rise by an additional 155% from July 1. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, expressing dismay over the recent price hikes, has ordered a forensic audit of the recent increases, along with a report on infrastructure, gas theft, and operational deficiencies within three months. In light of these circumstances, the importance of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project has become paramount.

In a bid to address the pressing energy crisis gripping Pakistan, Prime Minister’s directives for the immediate establishment of an international ministerial commission to oversee the project underscore the government’s commitment to finding viable solutions. Petroleum Minister Mussadik Malik, while expressing reservations amid the fluctuating value of the dollar, emphasized the looming specter of further demands from certain companies. The ballooning circular debt in the energy sector, now totaling a staggering 5 trillion rupees, highlights the urgency of action. Minister Malik’s assertion that seeking an exemption from the United States regarding the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project is paramount reflects the gravity of the situation.

Pakistan’s imperative for energy security cannot be overstated, and the significance of the Iran gas pipeline project in addressing this need is undeniable. The government’s pledge to present its case to the United States transparently, backed by comprehensive political and technical justifications, underscores its diplomatic resolve. While acknowledging the rampant inflation plaguing the country, it’s evident that affordable gas is an urgent necessity for Pakistan’s economic stability. Despite the complexities of geopolitical dynamics, efforts to advance this critical project must persist.

The project’s long-standing limbo since 2009 underscores the need for diplomatic finesse and strategic maneuvering to navigate through geopolitical hurdles. The caretaker government’s prior approval of the pipeline’s construction reflects a consensus on its importance, albeit delayed due to geopolitical intricacies. As Pakistan navigates the intricate web of international relations, it must leverage diplomatic channels to advance its energy agenda while ensuring compliance with global mandates. With concerted efforts and diplomatic agility, the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project holds the promise of alleviating the nation’s energy woes and fostering sustainable economic growth.
