WASHINGTON: Three former officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have filed a class action lawsuit against the administration of Donald Trump, alleging they were dismissed as part of politically motivated retaliation.
According to international media reports, the plaintiffs—Michelle Ball, Jamie Garman, and Blair Tolman—claimed they were removed from their positions due to their involvement in investigations into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
The former officials argued that FBI career agents are expected to remain non-partisan and should not be required to show loyalty to any political figure or party. They maintained that their dismissals were carried out without due legal process and were based on false accusations of political bias.
In the 48-page complaint, the plaintiffs said they received sudden termination letters in October and November bearing the signature of FBI Director Kash Patel. The letters reportedly accused them of “weaponising” their authority.
The lawsuit also noted that the three officials had assisted investigations led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, which resulted in criminal charges against Trump in 2023 over alleged attempts to overturn election results. However, those cases were later withdrawn after Trump’s re-election in 2024, in line with Justice Department policy.
The plaintiffs further alleged that after returning to the White House, the Trump administration took action against individuals associated with past investigations or policies. They argued that their dismissal not only damaged their professional reputations but also raised serious concerns about the independence of law enforcement institutions in the United States.
The development follows a similar case last December, when 12 former FBI employees filed a lawsuit against the agency, alleging they were fired for kneeling during Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020.
