PARIS: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been released from La Santé prison in Paris after serving 20 days, the authorities confirmed.
According to reports, the court permitted Sarkozy to remain free under judicial supervision while appealing his sentence in the case concerning alleged funding from Libya. Under the court’s conditions, he is prohibited from leaving France and must remain in contact with officials from the Ministry of Justice. Earlier this year, in September, Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison — two of them suspended — for accepting funds from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential campaign. He was taken into custody on 21 October to begin serving his sentence.
