In response to these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to allow tens of thousands of residents evacuated from northern border areas to return to their homes

BEIRUT: A series of devastating explosions involving communication devices has rocked Lebanon, leaving at least 14 people dead and over 450 injured, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. The incidents, which occurred on Wednesday, targeted walkie-talkies reportedly used by Hezbollah in the southern regions of the country and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

These attacks come just a day after similar explosions involving pagers killed 12 people and injured approximately 2,800 in both Lebanon and Syria. The Lebanese Health Ministry has described the explosions as part of a “wave of enemy attacks,” indicating that the incidents are likely part of escalating hostilities in the region. The devices detonated in both instances were reportedly linked to Hezbollah, which has been accused of using them for operational purposes.

The explosions have further strained an already volatile situation in Lebanon, where Hezbollah holds significant influence. The group has been a key player in the regional conflicts and its involvement in military operations has often made it a target of foreign actors. In response to these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to allow tens of thousands of residents evacuated from northern border areas to return to their homes. His brief video statement did not specifically address the recent explosions or provide details about Israeli military operations related to these incidents.

“This is a step towards restoring normalcy,” Netanyahu said, while acknowledging that the security situation remains fragile. He refrained from discussing the military technology or tactics used in the recent attacks, leaving key questions about the explosions unanswered. Meanwhile, in the United States, the attacks have sparked a political debate, with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling for a comprehensive investigation into Israel’s potential involvement. She demanded that Congress and the U.S. State Department clarify whether American technology or support was involved in the development or deployment of the devices used in the explosions.

“This attack clearly and unequivocally violates international humanitarian law and undermines U.S. efforts to prevent a broader conflict,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. She urged Congress to seek a full explanation, emphasizing the need for accountability amid growing international concerns about the escalation of violence in the region. The situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, with the threat of further violence looming large.
