ISLAMABAD: Senator Faisal Vawda has alleged that following the murder of renowned journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Murad Saeed sought refuge at Sharif’s residence.
Speaking during a special transmission on a private television channel, Vawda claimed that imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan had designated Murad Saeed as his political successor. “He didn’t know that Arshad Sharif would be murdered, though,” Vawda remarked, adding that he had previously warned Imran Khan about an assassination attempt on his life.
Vawda highlighted that senior PTI leadership was notably absent during the attack on Imran Khan, which he believes was intended to take the former prime minister’s life.
Regarding Arshad Sharif’s departure from Dubai, Vawda alleged that it was orchestrated by Arsalan Satti, an individual appointed by former Director-General of ISI Faiz Hameed. He also criticised the delayed arrest of Hameed, stating that the “oppressive environment” had eased since his detention.
Vawda praised Chaudhry Nisar for launching a crucial investigation into the case, which he claims resulted in damaging several political careers. He also hinted at potential legislative changes in the near future, assuring that any decisions made by the assembly would serve Pakistan’s best interests.
In response to a query about possible legal developments, Vawda remarked, “Do you think I’ve come to Islamabad just to have coffee?” He further stressed the importance of support from JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in safeguarding the country’s democratic processes, hinting at the possibility of certain constitutional offices being vacated soon.
Murad Saeed’s First Public Appearance in 15 Months
Murad Saeed, a senior PTI leader and former federal minister, made his first public appearance in over a year through a recorded video message during a rally in Islamabad on Sunday. In his address, Saeed called for unified social media efforts in support of Imran Khan and other party members currently detained due to the ongoing political crisis.
“Every PTI social media activist’s sole purpose should be to focus on how their posts benefit Imran Khan and the detainees,” he stated. His message was well-received by rally attendees, marking a notable return to the political scene after a 15-month absence.
Arshad Sharif’s Tragic Death in Kenya
Arshad Sharif, a prominent journalist who fled Pakistan in August 2022 after facing sedition charges, was tragically shot and killed in Nairobi, Kenya, in October 2022. His wife, Javeria Siddique, confirmed the news of his death on social media, stating, “I lost my friend, husband, and favourite journalist today, as per police he was shot in Kenya.” Sharif had initially moved to Dubai, citing threats to his life, before relocating to Kenya. His untimely death shocked human rights groups, the media community, and civil society, leading to calls for a thorough investigation and full disclosure of the circumstances surrounding his assassination.
