KARACHI: A Karachi court has handed over journalist Farhan Mallick to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a four-day physical remand. Mallick, a former news director of a private TV channel, was presented before the Judicial Magistrate East in Karachi by FIA officials. The agency had requested his remand, which the court approved.
His lawyer argued in court that Mallick was already under investigation in multiple inquiries and that the Sindh High Court had issued orders preventing any legal action against him. He accused the FIA of disregarding these directives by proceeding with the arrest. Mallick was taken into custody by the FIA’s Cyber Crime Wing in Karachi a day earlier. The case against him had reportedly been under investigation for the past three months. On Thursday, he had been summoned to the FIA Cyber Crime office for a statement. Later, on the orders of the Cyber Crime director, Sub-Inspector Zeeshan formally registered case number 25/25 and placed him under arrest. The circumstances surrounding his detention and the charges against him remain unclear, raising concerns about press freedom and due process in the country.
