KARACHI: On International Rivers Day, March 14, the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum organized a protest rally in Ibrahim Haideri under the banner “Protect Rivers, Protect Human.” The rally passed through multiple areas of Ibrahim Haideri and concluded at Mil Jetty, highlighting concerns over water scarcity and environmental degradation.
Saeed Baloch, Central General Secretary of the forum, warned that the Indus Delta has been severely damaged, while authorities are planning to excavate six canals on the Indus River. He stressed that water is essential for life, noting that glaciers are melting and prolonged water shortages in the Indus Delta have already caused Sindh to lose 4.2 million acres of fertile land.
Fatima Majeed, Senior Vice Chairperson, stated that failure to protect rivers and natural resources threatens civilizations. She condemned the proposed canals, including the Cholistan Canal, saying they could render Sindh desolate and endanger its people.
Ayub Shan, Central Information Secretary, emphasized that access to water is a fundamental human right, while Talib Kachhi, Secretary of Fisherfolk Karachi, warned that canals would disrupt the natural ecological balance.
The rally concluded with participants laying flowers along the seashore to honor the Indus River and reaffirm their commitment to its protection.
