LAHORE: In a significant operation, the Shah Latif Investigation Police have successfully apprehended a fugitive who had recently escaped from Malir Jail. The suspect, who was captured injured in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, sustained a fractured leg while attempting to scale the prison wall. This arrest took place on Friday, following a coordinated effort between local authorities and the Punjab Police.
Inspector Zakirullah, the investigation in-charge at Shah Latif Town Police Station, revealed that a team of four officers, including the Station Investigation Officer (SIO), acted on a tip-off and traveled to Punjab to execute the operation. With the support of Punjab Police, they located and arrested the escaped prisoner. While they have confirmed the arrest, Inspector Zakirullah noted that further details will be shared once the suspect is returned to Karachi.
The fugitive was originally detaine” two’years ago by the SITE Superhighway Police on charges of kidnapping and assault. His escape on October 20 was quite dramatic; he managed to cut through a bathroom window in Barrack No. 5 of Circle No. 1 at Malir Jail before climbing over the wall. In response to this incident, senior officials ordered a thorough investigation, leading to the registration of a case (FIR No. 24/1350) against eight prison officials, including the assistant superintendent and the duty officer, citing negligence.
So far, seven of the implicated officers have been arrested. The case was filed by Deputy Superintendent of Malir Jail, Zulfiqar Ali Pirzada, highlighting the systemic failures that allowed the escape to occur. This incident has sparked a broader discussion on prison security and the need for stringent measures to prevent such escapes in the future, as authorities work to ensure accountability among the prison staff involved.
