LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab, expressed her gratitude to Germany for its role in helping Pakistan secure the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus status and noted the strengthening economic ties between the two nations. In a recent meeting with German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, and her delegation—which included Senior Policy Officer Antonia Felicitas Peters and German Ambassador Alfred Grannas—Maryam Nawaz emphasized the growing commercial and economic relationship.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, as well as cooperation on environmental protection and climate change. Maryam Nawaz appreciated Germany’s donation of 91.1 million euros for flood relief and highlighted the agreement to collaborate on renewable energy and climate-friendly initiatives. She informed the delegation of Punjab’s increased budget for environmental programs, marking a 400 percent rise, aimed at combating environmental degradation and haze.
Germany has also provided 24 million euros for renewable energy projects in Pakistan. Maryam Nawaz acknowledged this support and praised German businesses for their investment in the textile sector. She reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women’s economic participation, noting that the Garments City and plug-and-play textile units will foster women’s economic independence and provide significant employment opportunities. Maryam Nawaz also introduced a new school meal program aimed at addressing nutritional deficiencies among students.
The Chief Minister briefed the German Minister on recent improvements in health and education sectors. In response, Minister Schulze praised the Garments City initiative and acknowledged Punjab’s skilled workforce and industrial potential. She commended the visible involvement of women in various sectors, including parliament and government agencies, as a positive development. The meeting underscored the continued collaboration between Pakistan and Germany, particularly in areas of mutual interest like economic development, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment.
