KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government, Saeed Ghani, acknowledged the shortcomings within local government institutions, admitting that they are not performing their duties to the level expected in serving the public. Addressing journalists at an event, Ghani emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, urging reporters to write the truth, as this would prompt the authorities to take necessary action and implement improvements.
Speaking at a gathering organized by the Local Bodies Reporters Association (LIBRA) to honor veteran journalist Shehzad Chughtai with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Ghani expressed his willingness to support the association in their rightful endeavors. While he expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), pointing to the existence of numerous illegal constructions from the past, he urged the media to play a proactive role in preventing new illegal buildings from being erected. “At the very least, the media should help stop the rise of new illegal constructions,” Ghani remarked, further pledging to cooperate with journalists where justified.
The event, held at KMC Sports Complex, saw participation from senior journalists, including former Karachi Press Club President Imtiaz Khan Faran, LIBRA General Secretary Imran Ali Shah, senior journalist Iqtidar Anwar, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi spokesperson Zahid Askari, and LIBRA Finance Secretary Abid Abbasi, among others. In Shehzad Chughtai’s absence, the award was received on his behalf by LIBRA President Tanveer Syed. Several other journalists, including Imtiaz Faran, Nadeem Siddiqui, and Malik Aftab, along with Sindh Local Government spokesperson Zubair Memon and KDA spokesperson Akram Sattar, were also honored for their contributions.
