MULTAN: Chairman of the Senate, Yousaf Raza Gilani, has issued a stern warning to India, declaring that any attempt to block or disrupt the flow of water to Pakistan would be treated as an act of war.
Speaking at a press conference in Multan, Gilani underlined the critical role water plays in the lives of millions and said Pakistan would not tolerate any interference with its water rights. “Water is essential for everyone—it is not something that can be used as a weapon,” Gilani said, as he addressed reporters. “Any move to cut off water flow will be met with a strong response.”
Referring to past conflicts, Gilani said Pakistan had been left with no choice but to respond when India launched attacks in the past. He recalled how the international community had rejected India’s version of events, including its narrative surrounding the Pahalgam incident, and instead acknowledged Pakistan’s stance.
He pointed out that Pakistan had offered to hold independent and impartial investigations into the Pahalgam attack, but India chose confrontation over conversation. “Instead of sitting at the table, India chose aggression,” Gilani noted. He urged both countries—both nuclear powers—to avoid the path of conflict. “The consequences of war are devastating. Dialogue is the only sensible option,” he said.
Turning to matters at home, Gilani said Pakistan’s strength lies in unity and democratic process. He called on elected representatives to stay connected to the people who voted for them and to take active part in the budget process to address public concerns. “This is not just the government’s job. It’s everyone’s responsibility to work together for Pakistan’s progress,” he added.
