DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A spirited debate on the “Responsible Role of Media in National Development” took place at Gomal University’s City Campus as part of the Fifth Edition of the Dosty Peshawar Literature Festival, Dera Chapter.
The event, organised under the guidance of Professor Dr Ihsanullah Danish, Director of the Tank Campus, was moderated by senior journalist Muhammad Rehan from Dera Ismail Khan and drew participation from students, academics, and media professionals.
Speakers included journalist Muhammad Irfan Mughal, Incharge of the Press Information Department Dera and PRO to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Muhammad Fazal ur Rehman, and journalist Abul Moazzam Turabi. The panel discussed the media’s crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development, addressing questions from the audience on contemporary challenges and responsibilities in journalism.
Participants underscored that responsible media is vital for exposing corruption, monitoring governance, and covering development initiatives, thereby fostering public trust. At the same time, concerns were raised over the rise of fake news, sensationalism, and the erosion of journalistic ethics. Panelists emphasized the importance of verification, research, and balanced reporting as foundational principles for maintaining credibility and societal impact.
The debate further explored the concept of constructive journalism and solution-oriented reporting, highlighting the need for professional training for journalists. Discussions also focused on balancing freedom of expression with national interests, countering anti-state propaganda, and recognizing the role of youth and educational institutions in supporting ethical media practices.
Organizers and participants paid tribute to Dr Ihsanullah Danish and his team for effectively coordinating the event, praising their efforts in creating a platform that encourages intellectual exchange and civic engagement. Officials noted that such initiatives not only enhance media literacy among students but also strengthen the broader democratic fabric by fostering informed, critical, and engaged citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
