BISSAU: The military in Guinea-Bissau has dismissed the country’s president and imposed a nationwide curfew following a disputed presidential election, deepening political turmoil in the West African state.

According to news agencies in the capital, Bissau, the army announced that all state institutions would remain suspended until further notice. Borders and airspace were sealed, and security forces were deployed across key government sites.

The military declared that the electoral process was being halted until “constitutional order” was restored. The move came just a day before official results were expected.

Presidential polls were held on Sunday, but both incumbent Umaro Embaló and his rival Fernando Dias claimed victory, raising fears of unrest in a country long troubled by political instability.

The military has not yet outlined a roadmap for restoring civilian rule, and regional organizations are watching closely as tensions continue to rise.
