KARACHI: Once renowned as one of Karachi’s premier residential areas, Gulshan-e-Iqbal now stands as a stark example of urban decay following recent heavy rains. The neighborhood, known for its upscale residences and bustling activity, is grappling with severe infrastructure damage, including crumbling roads and a malfunctioning sewage system.
Streets across Gulshan-e-Iqbal are marred by large potholes, turning daily commutes into hazardous undertakings. The damage is so extensive that motorcyclists frequently encounter accidents due to the treacherous conditions. Particularly affected areas include Block 13-D1, where the size of the potholes poses significant risks, and the roads around the underpass in Block 13-D3, which remain severely compromised. In addition to road damage, stagnant rainwater in internal lanes of Blocks 1 and 2 has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding, further aggravating public health concerns.
The situation is compounded by the disruption of the sewage system, leading to an unsanitary environment that affects the quality of life for residents. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has attributed the deteriorating conditions to negligence by the town administration. Wahab pointed out that Gulshan-e-Iqbal falls under the jurisdiction of the town administration, while the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is actively working to manage rainwater drainage in areas under its control. Despite these efforts, coordination issues between KMC and the town administration appear to be hindering effective resolution.
Efforts to contact Dr. Fawad, Chairman of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, for a response were unsuccessful, as he did not return phone calls. This lack of communication has left residents in a state of frustration, as jurisdictional disputes between the KMC and town authorities continue to delay necessary repairs and maintenance. In addition to the potholes and stagnant water, significant road damage is reported around Mumtaz Manzil and Gilani Railway Station.
The combined effects of these issues are creating a challenging living environment for the local population. As the city struggles to address these pressing problems, the need for urgent and coordinated action becomes increasingly apparent. The public remains hopeful for a swift resolution to restore Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s infrastructure and return the area to its former prestige.
