PANJGUR: A police sub-inspector was fatally shot late Sunday night when gunmen attacked his patrol unit in Chitkan Bazaar, Panjgur. Sub-Inspector Shakeel Ahmed sustained severe injuries in the assault and succumbed to his wounds shortly after.
The attack occurred while Ahmed’s unit was conducting a routine patrol. The assailants managed to flee the scene before additional police reinforcements could arrive. The body of the deceased officer was transported to a nearby hospital, where forensic teams have begun gathering evidence from the crime site. An investigation into the attack is currently underway.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the assault, expressing condolences to Ahmed’s family. “Sub-Inspector Shakeel Ahmed’s sacrifice in the line of duty will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family,” Naqvi stated.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Panjgur, situated in Balochistan province, has experienced sporadic violence in recent years, frequently targeting security personnel. Last month, Balochistan faced a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on August 26, resulting in over 50 deaths, including security officials. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for those attacks, which spanned across 10 districts.
This recent attack on Sub-Inspector Ahmed adds to the province’s ongoing security challenges, marking one of the deadliest incidents in recent years. In response, the federal government and relevant stakeholders have reviewed the security situation, leading to a decision to grant special powers to law enforcement agencies, including the army. This includes the authority to detain terror suspects for up to three months without filing an FIR or obtaining court orders.
