KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced that the Karachi Rights Movement, initiated in Karachi, has now gained nationwide momentum as citizens across the country demand their rightful share rather than mere promises.
Addressing a large gathering in Karachi late Monday night, Rehman emphasized that the movement reflects growing national frustration with inadequate governmental responses to issues such as high electricity tariffs, gas prices, and inflation. The event followed a rally that welcomed Rehman at Urdu Bazar in Nazimabad, leading him to Alhassan Chowk.
Rehman criticized the current government for its handling of basic utilities and excessive taxation. He called for a reduction in electricity tariffs, suggesting that temporary relief measures, such as those only applied in Punjab, are insufficient. He also urged the government to curb its lavish expenditures funded by taxpayers and to honor agreements made with JI.
The JI leader warned of potential actions if demands are not met, including a three-day strike, a long march to Islamabad, and a boycott of electricity bills. He criticized the past agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which he claims have burdened lower and middle-income families with high electricity bills.
Rehman attributed the current crises to previous governments, including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Q League, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), accusing them of failing to address these issues effectively.
The JI leader called for state institutions to return to their constitutional roles and pledged that the JI’s peaceful resistance movement would continue until it achieves its goals. Rehman invited Karachi residents to join JI’s nationwide membership campaign, reinforcing the party’s commitment to addressing systemic issues and advocating for citizens’ rights.
