82 percent of party workers participated in JI Ameer election; PM Sharif congratulated Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on getting elected

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has been elected as the party’s new Ameer on Thursday. Rehman was elected as the JI Ameer by the majority and his tenure would last from 2024 to 2029. This was the 19th election for the appointment of the JI Ameer. 82 percent of the party workers had participated in the election of the Ameer.

Earlier in February, Sirajul Haq stepped down as the JI Ameer following the defeat in the recently held elections. The JI secured no seats in the National Assembly and got only two seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly. In 2014, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s senior minister and leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Sirajul Haq, was elected as the new Ameer of the party.

Sirajul Haq replaced the then-outgoing chief Syed Munawar Hassan. The elections were at JI Headquarters Mansoora. Out of 31,311 office-bearers of the party, 25,533 people voted, which Sirajul Haq managed to secure a majority of votes in 2014. Siraj ul Haq remained party chief for a tenure of five years and he was re-elected in 2019. Now after serving the JI for 10 years, Siraj ul Haq resigned from his post.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on getting elected as Ameer Jamaat e Islami. The prime minister expressed best wishes for Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman and appreciated him for services to his party. He expressed hope that under the leadership of Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman Jamaat e Islami would play an active role for strengthening democracy and for public welfare.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) former Ameer Sirajul Haq on Thursday extended his best wishes to newly-elected Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Haq said: “May the Higher Power give strength to Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman.” “May the election of Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman as the emir prove to be fruitful for the people of Pakistan and the entire world,” Haq said.
