Party chief Hafiz Naeem highlights how 74pc of population struggles financially amid rulers’ extravagant spending

ISLAMABAD: Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has declared his party’s readiness to maintain a prolonged protest if necessary to address the nation’s pressing issues. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Rehman asserted that JI is prepared to stay on the streets for up to 40 days to secure their demands, underscoring that the concerns extend beyond JI and affect the entire nation.
Rehman criticized the deteriorating law and order situation, particularly highlighting problems in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab, while pointing out the dominance of bandits in the kacha areas of Sindh. He expressed alarm over the fact that 74% of the population is struggling to meet their basic expenses, with increasing youth disillusionment over the lack of opportunities in the country. Rehman lambasted the ruling class for their lavish spending amidst these widespread struggles.
The JI leader also took aim at the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), accusing it of significant corruption, with embezzlement totaling Rs1,300 billion. Rehman acknowledged the necessity of broadening the tax net but warned that increasing tax rates might undermine the competitiveness of exporters. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to taxation that does not stifle economic growth.
Rehman expressed frustration over the government’s handling of gas shortages, arguing that timely and effective action, particularly regarding the Pak-Iran gas pipeline and accelerated gas exploration, could have alleviated the problem. He specifically pointed to significant gas exploration opportunities in Kohat that were not properly leveraged.
In addition to economic and administrative critiques, Rehman criticized the government’s approach to regional unrest and accused it of using delaying tactics in local government elections. He highlighted the deteriorating state of local bodies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the challenges in conducting local elections in Punjab and Islamabad. Rehman’s remarks reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the current administration’s ability to address fundamental issues facing the country. The JI chief’s statement signals a commitment to continued protest and political activism, aiming to force the government to address these critical issues and deliver on promises of reform and improvement.
