GAZA: Hamas has sharply criticized US President Joe Biden’s recent comments suggesting that the militant group was not fully committed to a Gaza truce deal. The Palestinian organization accused Biden of providing a “green light” for Israel to intensify its military actions against Gaza.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Hamas described Biden’s remarks—made as he was departing Chicago after a speech at the Democratic National Convention—as misleading and reflective of an “American bias” towards Israel. The group claimed Biden’s statements effectively endorse the continuation of the conflict, which they argue is a “war of extermination” against Gaza’s civilians.
The condemnation coincided with ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Egypt on Tuesday, engaged in talks aimed at negotiating a ceasefire in the 10-month-long conflict. Blinken, who had met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, is scheduled to visit Qatar next, a key player in the truce negotiations along with Egypt.
Hamas has expressed dissatisfaction with recent modifications proposed by the US to the ceasefire framework initially outlined by Biden on May 31. The group accuses Washington of aligning too closely with Israeli demands and obstructing the original ceasefire proposal. They have urged the US administration to reverse its stance and press Israel to adhere to the initial framework. In response, Hamas has called on mediators to ensure Israel accepts the original terms, emphasizing their commitment to the ceasefire plan despite ongoing tensions.
