PESHAWAR: The Maraka Humanitarian Observatory (MHO), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science at the University of Peshawar, successfully hosted a hybrid seminar titled “Legal and Policy Frameworks in the Context of Humanitarian Response.” This event brought together a diverse audience, including academicians, human rights activists, and research scholars, for an in-depth discussion on the critical intersection of law and humanitarian action.
The seminar featured Dr. Clea Kahn, a renowned expert in Humanitarian Law, who served as the guest speaker. Dr. Shahida Aman, Chairperson of the Political Science Department, warmly welcomed Dr. Kahn and the attendees, setting the stage for a highly insightful presentation. In her address, Dr. Kahn explored the significance of legal frameworks within humanitarian contexts, emphasizing their essential role in protecting civilians and regulating humanitarian interventions during crises.
Drawing on her vast experience with organizations such as the United Nations, various NGOs, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), she highlighted key international laws and conventions, including Refugee Law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Dr. Kahn’s talk underscored the critical importance of integrating protection measures into all humanitarian activities.
Following the presentation, the seminar transitioned into a dynamic discussion, where participants engaged with Dr. Kahn’s insights and examined the practical challenges of implementing legal frameworks in real-world humanitarian settings. Dr. Noreen Naseer, who moderated the event, concluded the seminar by expressing gratitude to Dr. Kahn and the participants for their valuable contributions.
