A three-member FIA team questioned the former prime minister for about 45 minutes at Adiala Jail on Saturday

RAWALPINDI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has initiated a formal inquiry into a controversial social media post attributed to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister, Imran Khan. The post, shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), allegedly incited unrest and targeted state institutions, prompting the FIA to step in and investigate the matter.

On Saturday, a three-member FIA team, led by Deputy Director Ayaz Khan, visited Adiala Jail to question Imran Khan for approximately 45 minutes. The investigation focused on understanding the nature of the post and identifying those responsible for managing Khan’s social media accounts. During the inquiry, Imran Khan was asked about his involvement in handling the account and whether the post was issued under his directives.

Khan, who remains detained, had earlier made it clear that he would only cooperate with the investigation in the presence of his legal team. The former prime minister’s stance has created some friction with the authorities, as the FIA is expected to conduct follow-up visits to continue its probe. The investigation aims to uncover not only who manages Imran Khan’s social media presence but also the intent behind the post, which the government has condemned as an attempt to destabilize the country.

Speaking on the matter, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar criticized the PTI founder for allegedly using his platform to “create anarchy and undermine national security.” The minister highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating that the FIA’s investigation is critical in maintaining the rule of law and holding those responsible accountable for any inflammatory actions.

Tarar also took the opportunity to condemn recent remarks made by senior PTI leaders during public rallies. He specifically criticized what he called the “indecent language” used against journalists and women, urging the PTI leadership to issue a public apology. His rebuke extended to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, whose statements he deemed inappropriate for a provincial leader, further fueling tensions between the PTI and government officials.

The inquiry into Imran Khan’s social media activities is the latest in a series of legal challenges faced by the former prime minister since his ousting from office. The FIA is working to ascertain whether Khan’s social media posts were deliberately intended to stir unrest, and if others within his party may have played a role in amplifying these messages.
