NEW DEHLI: India has launched the heaviest satellite ever sent into space from its territory, marking a new milestone for the country’s expanding space program and its ambitions in the global commercial satellite market.
The Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) said the satellite, weighing 6,100kg, was the largest payload ever launched from Indian soil. The satellite was carried aboard the LVM3-M6 rocket and successfully placed into low Earth orbit.
According to Isro, the mission deployed the US-built AST SpaceMobile communications satellite, highlighting India’s growing role as a low-cost launch provider for international customers. Officials said the launch demonstrated the reliability and increasing capacity of India’s heavy-lift launch vehicles.
The achievement is seen as a boost to India’s space program, which has gained international attention for delivering missions at a fraction of the cost of many western competitors.
