KARACHI: Police say they have dismantled a highly wanted interprovincial gang accused of robbing jewellers of large quantities of gold and cash in Sindh and Punjab, following a series of operations by Karachi’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and the CIA.
According to a police press release dated 22 December 2025, the SIU took over the investigation of two major robbery cases from Karachi’s central district. One case, registered at Gulberg police station in 2024, involved the snatching of 2,950 grams of gold, while another, registered at Liaquatabad police station in 2025, concerned the looting of Rs15m in cash.
Investigators said both cases were traced using technical surveillance and investigative expertise, leading to action against the gang allegedly responsible for the crimes. Over the past several days, police arrested a total of seven suspects, including two women and three men who were detained while injured. The alleged ringleader of the group was killed in a police encounter a day earlier, officials said.
During the operations, police recovered 608 grams of gold jewelry, Rs10m in cash, five 9mm pistols with ammunition and a car. Those arrested or killed were identified as Imran, Irfan and Sunil, all wounded at the time of arrest; Amir, the alleged gang leader, who was killed; Bilal Shah; another suspect named Irfan; and two women, Kinza and Barkha.
Police allege the group targeted jewelers across several cities in Punjab and Sindh, carrying out robberies in particular in Karachi, Lahore and Hyderabad. Officials described the suspects as habitual offenders with dozens of cases registered against them, including armed robbery, possession of illegal weapons, mobile phone snatching and firing on police officers. The gang is also alleged to be involved in additional cases registered at Ferozabad and Gulberg police stations.
Further investigations are under way, police said, with efforts continuing to arrest remaining suspects and recover the rest of the looted cash and jewelry. A spokesperson said the SIU and CIA remained actively engaged in operations against organized criminal groups in Karachi.
