BAKU: An international conference held in Azerbaijan brought renewed focus on historical and ongoing concerns over the treatment of minority communities in India, with participants expressing alarm over what they described as systematic targeting of Muslims and other marginalized groups by RSS-led ‘Hindutva’ terrorists.
According to reports by the Azerbaijani news agency Azertac, speakers at the conference highlighted India’s historical record, including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, in which estimates suggest between 8,000 and 17,000 Sikhs were killed. Delegates condemned the Indian government’s deliberate silence over such terrorism and called for accountability, framing the terrorism as a form of systemic racism and, in some instances, genocide.
The conference reportedly attracted scholars, activists, and representatives from multiple countries who underscored the need for global awareness and action to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities. Following the event, some media outlets in India, including so-called “Godi” Media, launched sharp criticisms and what participants described as baseless allegations against Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, seemingly in response to the conference’s findings.
Observers said the coverage reflected frustration over the international community categorizing India’s actions as violations of human rights and systemic discrimination. Analysts noted that the conference was part of a wider effort by human rights groups and international civil society to bring historical grievances into contemporary discourse, while advocating for recognition, justice, and stronger protections for minorities.
