TEHRAN: Iran’s state broadcaster confirmed early on Sunday that the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, had died, hours after officials in United States and Israel said he was killed in extensive airstrikes the previous day.

The announcement, carried by Iranian state media, said that arrangements including seven days of public holiday and 40 days of national mourning would be observed across Iran in response to his death. The confirmation marked a watershed moment in a conflict that began with a coordinated assault by US and Israeli forces against military and leadership targets in Iran on Saturday.
State broadcasters in Tehran said the 86‑year‑old has died as a result of the air campaign, which targeted his compound and other high‑level installations. In declaring a period of public mourning, officials described Ali Khamenei as a “martyr,” reaffirming his role as a central figure in Iran’s political and religious hierarchy for more than three decades.
US President Donald Trump had earlier claimed on social media that Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei had been killed, framing the strike as a strike against what he called “one of the most evil people in history.” International responses were quickly emerging. Leaders and diplomats around the world were assessing the implications of the announcement, with many urging caution and restraint as uncertainty spread about the next phase of the conflict.
