TEHRAN: Iran is facing a dual crisis, with rising domestic unrest and mounting external military pressures, amid reports of a secret contingency plan by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to intelligence sources cited by British media, Khamenei has reportedly prepared a “Plan B” to relocate to Moscow if security forces fail to control protests or refuse to follow orders. The plan would involve Khamenei, his immediate family, and his son Mojtaba Khamenei leaving Iran via pre-arranged routes, while foreign properties, assets, and cash would be secured to facilitate a safe exit.
Iran’s economy has been battered by high inflation, currency devaluation, corruption, and mismanagement, fueling widespread public anger. Analysts say security forces are also under pressure from these economic strains. The unrest has been compounded by external tensions.
US President Donald Trump has voiced support for Iranian protesters and threatened military intervention, while Israeli officials have made statements that have added to the geopolitical pressure. Experts note that Iran’s leadership is closely monitoring crises in Venezuela and Syria, where economic instability has weakened state structures.
In this context, Khamenei’s hardline rhetoric and labelling of protesters as “subversives” risks further inflaming tensions. Analysts argue that the government has no clear plan to stabilize the economy, and there is little indication of any compromise on Iran’s nuclear program that might satisfy US or Israeli concerns.
