TEHRAN: Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the wife of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died from injuries sustained in a US-Israel airstrike, Iranian state media confirmed on Monday.
Bagherzadeh, believed to be 78 or 79, had been in a coma since Saturday’s strike that killed her husband and several family members at their central Tehran residence. Tasnim news agency reported her death on Telegram, describing it as the “martyrdom of the wife of the martyred leader of the revolution.”
The airstrike, described by US officials as Operation Epic Fury, also claimed the lives of Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchild, and other relatives, delivering a devastating blow to Iran’s leadership. Khamenei, 86, had served as Supreme Leader since 1989, overseeing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and acting as the country’s most powerful political and military authority.
Despite decades of political turbulence, Bagherzadeh had largely remained out of the public eye. She held no official position and maintained a private life, focusing on her family. In a rare 2011 interview, she said her role was to “preserve a calm atmosphere in our home so that he could do his work in peace.”
Following the confirmation of the deaths, Iranian authorities announced a 40-day period of national mourning and a seven-day nationwide holiday to allow for funeral ceremonies and public condolences.
The killings occur amid ongoing military operations across Iran, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions. Israel launched strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on March 2, with at least 31 reported killed, while US officials noted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, previously damaged in earlier attacks, was under reconstruction.
The deaths of Khamenei and his wife signal a turning point in the conflict, heightening insecurity across the Middle East and prompting concern from global leaders over the potential for further escalation.
