TEHRAN: Iran has forcefully rejected a recent proposal from the United States to curb its uranium enrichment activities, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declaring that the country will continue its nuclear program without compromise. The message from Tehran is unmistakable: Iran will not bow to foreign pressure, and it will not engage in talks that undermine what it sees as its sovereign rights.

Speaking with characteristic defiance, Khamenei framed Washington’s overture—delivered through Omani mediators—as a direct affront to Iran’s national interests. He dismissed the suggestion as another attempt by the US to dictate terms to a nation that, in his view, has paid dearly for its independence. “Iran’s decisions stem from its sovereignty,” he said, “and will not require permission from anyone.”

At the center of the row is Iran’s insistence that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful. Yet, in rejecting the latest diplomatic approach from Washington, Khamenei made it clear that Tehran is not interested in reviving talks that he believes are rooted in bad faith. He accused the US of acting with arrogance, highlighting the continued imposition of economic sanctions as evidence that Washington’s real aim is to weaken Iran’s internal stability and its technological advances.

“Who are they to decide what Iran should or should not do?” Khamenei asked, his tone leaving no room for ambiguity. His remarks underline Tehran’s growing frustration with what it sees as one-sided demands that offer little in return, especially after years of compliance followed by the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal under former President Donald Trump. The US proposal, quietly sent through Oman—one of the few nations still able to mediate between the two adversaries—was aimed at opening the door to renewed talks.
